Hitachi have created a 500GB 2.5inch HDD, making them the provider of the largest capacity 2.5inch HDD, this drive has a capacity that is 36% larger than the nearest rivals Toshiba who produce a 320GB 2.5inch HDD.
This increased capacity has not been achieved by improving the platter data density, but by actually adding another platter to the HDD, this has taken its height from 9.5mm to 12.5mm, with each platter being 167GB in size, Hitachi have been quoted as saying that this new HDD uses a more efficient motor and as such adding another physical platter will not reduce laptop battery life.
